6 TIPS TO HELP YOU HAVE A SPOOKY BUT SAFE HALLOWEEN

By Jessie Stewart

Halloween is getting bigger every year, with more and more children and families hitting the streets to trick-or-treat. We’ve put together these six tips to help make sure you have a spooky but safe Halloween.

  1. Clear your yard and path: if you’re planning on welcoming trick-or-treaters, make sure you clear away all branches, debris and wires to make it easier to reach your front door. Remember, it’s not trip-or-treaters! With elaborate costumes and masks, the risk of tripping over is even higher than usual.
  2. Signage and decorations: Make it clear that you’re celebrating Halloween with fun decorations and signage. Jack-o-lanterns, tombstones, fake spiderwebs, skeletons – these all signal that you’re ready and welcoming of trick-or-treaters. If you aren’t big on Halloween, consider putting up a simple door sign to let people know and reduce the door-knockers throughout the night.
  3. Lighting: whilst it’s coming into summer, it can still be dark when trick-or-treaters are out, so make sure you light the way to your door with garden lighting and decorative fairy lights.
  4. Keep pets out of the way: We all love our pets, but on Halloween, it’s best to keep them out of the way so they don’t get overwhelmed or overexcited by all the visitors.
  5. Lock gates and other doors: Along with the treaters come the tricksters, so don’t forget to put away your valuables and lock any side gates or back doors to keep your home secure.
  6. Have fun!: Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Get in costume, take on a fun character and enjoy the night.
