We investigate what millions of inspiration-seekers are saying is a hit in 2022 and what’s the next big thing around the corner, selecting five of our favourite social-driven trends.
Which movements will you be following?
Oh my goth!
No longer relegated to the fringes of subculture, goth is back (or just plain old ‘gothic’ for the old schoolers).
Based on trending search terms, Pinterest is predicting a full blown goth-aissance. While the gloomy style is making a comeback in the world of fashion — from goth baby clothes to goth pyjamas — it’s also making a big impact on kitchen décor, with black making its way onto splashbacks, cabinetry and even walls and flooring.
For the entry-level goth, knick-knacks and small-scale kitchenware is an easy starting point. Anyone for skull soup bowls and cobweb napkin holders?
Emotional escape rooms
After a period of lockdowns and restrictions, 2022 has been a year for healing.
For many of us, the home has morphed into a multi-use space for both work and relaxation, making work-life balance and alone time harder than ever to come by.
If you need to carve out some time for yourself, why not create a special escape room?
Having a place specifically tailored for relaxation and hobbies has always been a common design feature of the home, from music studios to home libraries. Now expanding into the new-age realm, Pinterest users are driving searches for chill-out spaces like home massage rooms and crystal rooms.
There’s even been an 150% increase in the search for rage rooms, for when you just need to break stuff or exude your feels through expressive painting. Rock on!
Biophilic design
Indoor plants are an easy way to add a touch of nature to the home — especially in apartments or dwellings with little outdoor space. Now millennials are turning to plant-first design solutions to increase their connection to nature and enhance wellbeing.
For Pinterest user Kamili Bell Hill, aka Plantblerd, plants aren’t just a hobby, they’re a lifestyle.
“I feel like the next step for plant lovers is biophilic design,” she says. “If you like monstera, why stop at a 23cm pot? Fill a whole wall with them.”
From biophilic architecture to biophilic office and bedroom design, it’s clear that integrating nature into home design is the next big thing.
Barkitecture
Apparently, pampering your pets with puppacinos and luxury bedding isn’t enough. According to the Pinterest community, this year people are redesigning their homes with their cats and dogs at the forefront.
Whether you’re looking to catify your home or curate your four-legged friend his own special room, it’s clear that creature comforts are all the rage for the remainder of 2022.

Limitless luxe
Luxury homes are nothing new. Most contemporary abodes constructed these days boast some level of luxe in the kitchen or bathroom to attract buyers.
But what about pimping out the least-expected corners of your home, like the laundry or the basement? That’s what ‘limitless luxe’ is all about.
“Anyone can make the main bedroom look glamorous,” says Pinterest user Nicole Rosenberg.
“But I’m an expert at making the ‘forgotten’ rooms, such as basements and laundry rooms look stylish. It’s all about organisation.”
