How to Style a Square Room

By Rachael Vrana

The way you place furniture in a square room can make it or break it. You may have great furniture and a great space, but if you don’t get it right you will have no hope of achieving the balance and harmony a space needs in order to create a good impression.

The three things to remember about any space are your traffic zones, how you are going to move around the space and how you are going to use the space.

How to style a square room

1. Find a key feature
Sometimes a square room can feel a little boring and lack dynamic, so it’s important that once you’ve identified the main feature of the room, for example a fireplace or a large bay window, you then make sure it’s the room’s shining star. If there’s no focal point, create one by employing a huge piece of art to help create some pizzazz in the space or by including a feature piece of furniture (throne, anyone?).

2. Take the eyes upwards
Another way to break up the regularity of the room is to make sure the eye has some vertical interest to follow in the space. Make sure that there are elements of the room that make the eye lift from the furniture to the lighting. Typical ways to achieve this effect are through the arrangement of large accessories, flowers or lamps that point a person’s gaze upwards, or by using pendant lights to catch attention.

3. Work with the symmetry
Regularity and symmetry can also be an asset if you do it right. Don’t be frightened to enhance the squareness of the space by duplicating the symmetry with the furniture such as by placing two identical lounges opposite each other. The effect will obviously depend on what else is in the space but deliberate symmetry can sharpen the room.

Remember, you can also work the diagonals in a square room either by softening the corners with furniture or accessories to change perception of the room shape or by pushing the symmetry with the mid-line drawn from corner to corner rather than wall to wall. All of these tips will help bring some movement and excitement into a square room.
